Wordcards

Create wordcards on a computer, using Word or any word-processing software. Print out the words in a large font size, cut them out and stick them onto card with Sticki Dots.

Children can use the wordcards to make short sentences. Use Sticki Dots to stick the cards to a display board, or any suitable vertical surface, so that everyone can see.

Structure the activity by creating a sentence yourself, with one word missing. Children have to find the missing word among the remaining wordcards and stick it up in the correct place.

They can then move on to freer sentence building: stick up the first word then ask them to use the other wordcards to make true sentences.

A basic set of wordcards would include pronouns I and we, a selection of verbs (like, can, live in, am, are), and corresponding sentence endings: ice cream, football, swim, and so on. Include the name of the town or district where the children live, and also some numbers so that they can say how old they are: I am six.

Later, you can add simple noun phrases (My mum, My brother, ...) and verbs in the third person (likes, lives in, is).
